Ques/Help Why are custom fields repeated in 2 different tables?

I'm doing some manual imports, and I've always wondered why XenForo uses 2 different tables for custom fields?

One in the dedicated xf_thread_field_value table and the other in the xf_thread table

Is there any reason for this?
